The Hammer House of Horror approach was always a blend of classic Hammer period horror fun with more modern stories, so it’s fitting that the very first episode of the series involves a literal time warp. Patricia Quinn stars as a witch who manages to magick her way out of being executed in the Middle Ages, only to end up in the same place in the present day, where a lonely composer (Jon Finch) falls prey to her charms. It’s basically the story of a Hammer cinema character from the 1970s walking out of one of those films and into the 1980s, with everything that entails, and Quinn is plainly having a blast as the series’ lead-off villain. The contemporary setting of Hammer House of Horror meant the legendary studio could aim its darkly comic horror eye at all sorts of things, and in the case of “The Thirteenth Reunion,” the target was diet fads and health farms.

Along with his compatriot Rex (Leon Green), Nicholas liberates Simon and Tanith (Niké Arrighi) from a cult of devil worshippers, during which they disrupt a ceremony and are subsequently pursued by a vengeful spirit. It's a beguilingly mounted period piece, the type of which Hammer was so skilled at churning out, but it also catches you off-guard with its emotional impact. Unlike his terribly inert Countess Dracula, director Peter Sasdy finds an exquisite balance between character drama and alarming jolts within a larger story that plays closer to a Polanski-esque version of creeping madness than a typical Gothic horror melodrama. Snugly fitting the bill of '70s nihilism, Peter Collinson's bracing thriller would likely never be made nowadays, not for what it says or shows but for how unremittingly dour the whole production is. Like the best thrillers of this ilk, though, its darkest impulses do not weigh it down but rather give it a sadistic, jet-black comic edge.

Unfortunately Graham and Sarah's house is burgled, and the fetish is stolen.
